Summary

Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city。 Its students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be。 But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it。

Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but it’s only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they always knew they would) that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is。

Never Let Me Go breaks through the boundaries of the literary novel。 It is a gripping mystery, a beautiful love story, and also a scathing critique of human arrogance and a moral examination of how we treat the vulnerable and different in our society。 In exploring the themes of memory and the impact of the past, Ishiguro takes on the idea of a possible future to create his most moving and powerful book to date。

I was swept along - often with feelings of deep unease。 This is a book where you wish the narrator could go back and do things a bit differently。 Her voice is believable and consistent。 I end with sadness。

I'm not sure how to describe this book other than really, really cool。 I thought the world building was incredible and only wish I had been able to spend more time in the world that Ishiguro created。 I think the only real problem I had with this book is that I wanted more time - by the time the world was really established, the book was over。 I would have loved to have spent more time at Hailsham and the Cottages before diving into Kathy's later life。Overall, not the read I expected but really c I'm not sure how to describe this book other than really, really cool。 I thought the world building was incredible and only wish I had been able to spend more time in the world that Ishiguro created。 I think the only real problem I had with this book is that I wanted more time - by the time the world was really established, the book was over。 I would have loved to have spent more time at Hailsham and the Cottages before diving into Kathy's later life。Overall, not the read I expected but really cool。 I've read a few books in this kind of genre, but every one is unique in some way, which has been nice。 。。。more

I chose this book to fit a prompt for a reading challenge, "A book that has the same title as a song" and it turned out to be a really intriguing book。 Dystopian science fiction is a genre I typically enjoy and this was not a disappointment。。。 one of the first I've read in the genre that wasn't YA。 I chose this book to fit a prompt for a reading challenge, "A book that has the same title as a song" and it turned out to be a really intriguing book。 Dystopian science fiction is a genre I typically enjoy and this was not a disappointment。。。 one of the first I've read in the genre that wasn't YA。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 God this book could have been amazing。 Really cool concept, but it lost steam about halfway through and the ending felt rushed and big plot points were glossed over。。 like the author kept forgetting what the main idea of the book wasbut honestly could have been a 5/5

Very difficult to read as the subject matter is extremely dark。 It was an excellent book but hard to recommend to others。

Well, well, well。。。。 we meet again Ishiguro。 Although this time I didn't enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed reading The Buried Giant。 I think we all know what's this book about: Dystopic England + Clones + Donations, no need to say more。I came in with high hopes about this book。 I heard really good reviews and I was prepared to be utterly amazed。 But it didn't happen, my expectations were not met。 The ending felt quite anticlimactic。 I was hoping for some big reveal, some dark plot twist given Well, well, well。。。。 we meet again Ishiguro。 Although this time I didn't enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed reading The Buried Giant。 I think we all know what's this book about: Dystopic England + Clones + Donations, no need to say more。I came in with high hopes about this book。 I heard really good reviews and I was prepared to be utterly amazed。 But it didn't happen, my expectations were not met。 The ending felt quite anticlimactic。 I was hoping for some big reveal, some dark plot twist given the plot but no。 We got an okey ending。 But I don't do okey endings。 I'm left with some questions, don't know if others ever wonder the same thing;1。 Did the clones/copies/students (whatever u want to call them) have emotions? More especifically, did they know how to love? Did they understand it? 2。 Tommy and Kath。 Yes, I shipped them from the start。 But throughout the years it seem to me that they lost their connection, so in the end when they reconnect I didn't see a spark between them, I didn't see love。 3。 When it came to displays of love and affection from Kath towards others I keep wondering if she was somewhat cold/distant/not romantic at all bc she was a clone or bc Ishiguro could not portrayed a young girl emotions the right way。。。 Idk4。 We all agree that Ruth was a bitch, right? I dont even understand why they forgave her。 So, I had a good time reading this book, yet it the ending was not good enough for me。 Nevertheless, I really want to remark how extraordinary Ishiguro writing is!!! He's amazing, his style and words are always fitting! Its really effortless reading one of his book, you just go with the flow。 Here's one quote I really liked and want to share with you: "When I watched you dancing that day, I saw something else。 I saw a new world coming rapidly。 More scientific, efficient, yes。 More cures for the old sicknesses。 Very good。 But a harsh, cruel world。 And I saw a little girl, her eyes tightly closed, holding to her breast the old kind world, one that she knew in her heart could not remain, and she was holding it and pleading, never to let her go。” 。。。more

You know shit's not off to a great start when you're fifty pages in and yelling at the book to fucking start because the protagonist has decided to tell you in great detail every aspect of her life, and not one single bit of it is useful information。 This book is a fucking info-dump。 Couldn't the author find a different way to work all this shit into the story? Also, having heard about the movie from different sources and seen a bit of it, I saw the twist coming a mile away。 I was banking on the You know shit's not off to a great start when you're fifty pages in and yelling at the book to fucking start because the protagonist has decided to tell you in great detail every aspect of her life, and not one single bit of it is useful information。 This book is a fucking info-dump。 Couldn't the author find a different way to work all this shit into the story? I hate giving negative reviews, but this book is well loved so screw it。 I went in knowing nothing, and that's what I feel like I got: nothing。 This book, for me, was the literary equivalent of "this meeting could have been an email" Would've made a really nice short story but I don't see how this got stretched to a full book。 There are some beautiful connections, and the characters are well developed, but someone forgot to add the plot。 Summer camp stories with notes of impending doom。 That's w I hate giving negative reviews, but this book is well loved so screw it。 I went in knowing nothing, and that's what I feel like I got: nothing。 This book, for me, was the literary equivalent of "this meeting could have been an email" Would've made a really nice short story but I don't see how this got stretched to a full book。 There are some beautiful connections, and the characters are well developed, but someone forgot to add the plot。 Summer camp stories with notes of impending doom。 That's what you get。 。。。more

Ok, this book is very boring。 After being over halfway through the book where absolutely nothing is happening and nothing is being explained, I re-read the Goodreads description of the book and maybe I'm dumb but I didn't get any of that out of this。 It's literally a story about a bunch of kids in a weird school and then they grow up and die for some greater purpose that isn't really explained。 I don't see how this book got such high ratings。 Ok, this book is very boring。 After being over halfway through the book where absolutely nothing is happening and nothing is being explained, I re-read the Goodreads description of the book and maybe I'm dumb but I didn't get any of that out of this。 It's literally a story about a bunch of kids in a weird school and then they grow up and die for some greater purpose that isn't really explained。 I don't see how this book got such high ratings。 。。。more

Before I say anything about this book, let me preface that I read it in a grand total of three days, because I absolutely could not put it down。Haunting is the best word really to describe this book。 It starts in little ways, from the very beginning, there's just a sense that something is terribly off。 Ishiguro is a master at "show, don't tell", because halfway through the book I was still trying to piece things together。 It is almost frustrating, but it makes the payoff that much more impactful Before I say anything about this book, let me preface that I read it in a grand total of three days, because I absolutely could not put it down。Haunting is the best word really to describe this book。 It starts in little ways, from the very beginning, there's just a sense that something is terribly off。 Ishiguro is a master at "show, don't tell", because halfway through the book I was still trying to piece things together。 It is almost frustrating, but it makes the payoff that much more impactful。That being said, don't let the "sci-fi" label fool you。 This is a story about human relationships。 And frankly, sometimes these relationships suck。 I wish I didn't relate to it so strongly, but I have seen these sort of relationships throughout my life。 It is so unnervingly real, which makes the sci-fi aspect of it that much more believable。 The only reason I had to give it 4 out of 5 stars is because of how generally sad it made me。 It's an excellent book。 But I certainly won't be re-reading it。 。。。more

Monstrosity of humankindSoul wrenching dystopian story, beautifully written by very skillful writer。 Ethical questions about use of new technology and human relationships are brought up in a very simple but soul searching manner。

Millie Benstead

Beautifully written novel, set in a world that seems so alien but the characters are more relatable than ever。 Would be an especially interesting read now, I think, as modern science is on the way to growing human organs inside livestock - not quite clones, of course, but still raises interesting ethical issues surrounding organ harvesting which is explored by Ishiguro。

So。。。 I don't know what to rate this。On the one hand, it's one hell of an effective dystopian novel。 The level of resignation (OH, THE RESIGNATION) and loneliness is off the charts。 It drowns you。 This is one of those novels where you take a break from reading, and suddenly the things you've read start to come to mind, and just。。。 sink in。 Can't really binge this one, and good, because it's more effective, striking, depressing that way。On the other hand, the author's writing style really didn't So。。。 I don't know what to rate this。On the one hand, it's one hell of an effective dystopian novel。 The level of resignation (OH, THE RESIGNATION) and loneliness is off the charts。 It drowns you。 This is one of those novels where you take a break from reading, and suddenly the things you've read start to come to mind, and just。。。 sink in。 Can't really binge this one, and good, because it's more effective, striking, depressing that way。On the other hand, the author's writing style really didn't agree with me。 I do have a few scenes that will make me cry into my pillow at night, but as one of the top reviews already tackle, it's really exhausting。 Not just the material it tackles, but how it is told as well。 A friend told me that this writing style is common in Asian literature and that she loves it, so your mileage may very。 When I said that you couldn't binge this book, this was partially the reason: if you're used to narratives that flow easily like me, you might find it difficult to keep going。 I'd been wanting to read something by this author for a while now, and while I'm glad I finally did it, I don't think I'll be picking up any other books of his。 。。。more

What the hell did I just read? Honestly, this book started out slow, but interesting, then showed quite a bit of promise。 Then it just got。。。 boring。 And weird。 It was like listening to a story by your Great Aunt that is supposed to teach you a lesson but teaches you absolutely nothing。 All the characters were forgettable, and the experiences they had were just flat boring。 There was just no life to this book at all for me, which is sad because I could see the whole premise of it working out rea What the hell did I just read? I think this was a real slow-burner book。 Wasn't really captivating for me, but 4 stars because what I learned from it was memorable! Some of the themes that you might explore are loss and the inevitable, the importance of creativity, and the provocative question the novel revolves around of what it means to be human。 I think this was a real slow-burner book。 Wasn't really captivating for me, but 4 stars because what I learned from it was memorable! I was really hoping to enjoy this novel more! I found the first 2/3 of the novel to be intriguing, but I felt the ending to be too predictable and lackluster。 I wasn’t attached to the characters, and I didn’t glean any new insights。 Overall, 3/5 ⭐️⭐️
